Prince William Defeats Kate Middleton in German Boat Race

11 Aug 2017

Story Summary

A royal tour would not be complete without some friendly competition between the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. On day four of their week-long royal tour of Poland and Germany, Kate and William faced off on the water as the two took part in a boat race. Kate was given an “advantage” as an Olympic gold medalist—Filip Adamski, part of a winning German rowing squad—was placed in Kate’s boat. Yet, William was victorious, and “punched the air in delight” upon his win.

Before the race, Kate had told reporters, “No pressure, but I do want to beat my husband.” William had said it was “fine” that he was going up against an Olympian, but did concede, “This could be a challenge.” Kate also indicated some concern before the face-off took place, as she was asking Adamski for specifics about the mechanics, explaining she was “worried about crashing.” (He said, “If we crash, we crash together.”)

Before the race, the pair made pretzels after a tour of a traditional market in Heidelberg. Kate, during the session, was seen “protecting” her yellow Jenny Packham dress by wearing an apron and also could be seen “laughing as William grappled with the dough,” which is not a phrase we ever expected to come across in an article about the royal couple.

Unfortunately George and Charlotte were not seen at the day’s festivities—we feel like they would have been into the pretzel-making and watching their parents race! The Daily Mail notes that Kate and William have been “showing off their softer side” on this tour, by “cuddling children” and “doling out hugs.” Tomorrow marks the final day of the tour.
